August 26, Full Review…. August 18, Rating: 2. View All Critic Reviews 9. Mar 18, Buddy cop films have been a staple of Western cinema for, seemingly, the longest time.

You know the set-up. Two very different cops, one's a loose cannon or he might be goofball , the other does things by the book, work together to bring down whatever criminals the film may have for them.

At first, obviously, the cops do not get along, finding the other to be ineffective at their job. As the film progresses, however, they start to find some mutual respect for the other as they see that the other cop isn't as bad or as annoying at their job as they thought.

It's been like this, seemingly, for fucking aeons. And if you were expecting something completely different this movie then I don't really know what your problem is.

If you want want a movie that pokes fun at the genre's tropes and subverts them, then watch Hot Fuzz. Do yourself a favor and watch that amazing film please.

But I digress, this plays almost exactly into all of those stereotypes and tropes associated with the genre.

It's not concerned with reinventing the wheel as much as it is happy with just being a cog in that very large machine. There's nothing wrong with that, that's not an insult.

I've always been of the believe, and I do mean always, that films like this need to exist. I don't mean buddy cop films, I just mean light-hearted, sometimes silly, flicks that you can just shut your brain off for a little while and just enjoy.

These are otherwise known as escapist films. They need to exist as much as the complex drama with believable characters.

There needs to be be a balance. This is why I don't have much of a problem with the fact that this isn't gonna win any awards for originality.

One of the differences you could point out is the Canadian angle, where Ward, from Toronto, speaks English and Bouchard, from Montreal, speaks french and how that opens up several new angles for comedy.

I'm not from Canada, so I don't know how Quebecers are viewed in English-speaking parts of the country, but it's a different enough angle to give it its own identity when compared to other films in the same genre.

I also liked the fact that the movie switched between French and English dialogue. It's not much, but I did like that switch between languages.

It doesn't actually add anything to the film, but I still liked it. The movie, as I mentioned earlier, plays exactly how you would expect.

But I think the leads, Patrick Huard and Colm Feore, are good in their roles to make the movie far more watchable than it would have been without them.

I did have problems with the narrative which, honestly, isn't great. Then again, outside of maybe the first Lethal Weapon and Mel Gibson's suicidal thoughts after his wife's murder, there's been no real interesting character in this genre.

This movie is no different, there's no real character development, it's just the basic stuff you've seen in this genre for decades.

Bouchard is personally drawn into the case, more than normal of course, after his daughter gets kidnapped by the villain.

But, as I said, there's no legitimate character development from either Bouchard or Ward, so that makes caring a little difficult at times. The villain also isn't particularly effective, in my book.

This guy is killing off people that were connected to selling off Canadian hockey teams to the U. Talk about stupid and they don't even use it as a point of comedy.

The villain isn't treated super seriously, but it's not like they crack jokes about him either. Not to mention the fact that when you DO get to see the guy responsible, it all falls flat.

The guy is as bland a villain as you will ever see. He looks more like a Mark Zuckerberg type and not necessarily this evil asshole that needs to be stopped.

I don't think he was a particularly good villain prior to the reveal, but the reveal degrades him as a villain even further. There's just nothing threatening about the guy, so he just falls flat on his face.

There's a sequel coming out this year and I wouldn't mind seeing it. Not a bad movie, there's some entertainment to be had here, but there's nothing that you should go out of your way to see.

This is just an escapist diversion and nothing more. Jesse O Super Reviewer. Jul 04, This is a brilliant buddy cop film from my native province of Quebec.

With a great cast and a good story, this is a very funny film that has plenty of effective laughs that make this film better than most Hollywood-esque buddy cop films.

This is a must see film for viewers who enjoy a witty, original and well acted comedy. There is plenty of laugh out loud moments here, and the plot is very engaging as well.

The performances of the two lead actors make this film much better, and they have some good on-screen chemistry. This film is well done and the cast pull off something good.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop is always engaging due to a fine story, and it has some effective humor. At times there are parts of the film that don't work, luckily the performances are what keeps this film good and fun.

This has got to be one of the best Canadian films in quite some time. With some great performances and good jokes, Bon Cop, Bad Cop is a great comedy that is a must see for film fans.

The story of the film is engaging and I really enjoyed Colm Feore in this one. Patrick Huard brought a terrific sarcasm quality to his role, and just the differences between the two characters was what made this film so good.

If you're looking for a great comedy, then give this one a shot. This is a very unique twist on the buddy cop genre, and one worth watching.

This is a different type of comedy in the genre, and it only has been equalled by The Other Guys and 21 Jump Street. Alex r Super Reviewer.

May 20, So, they do the only reasonable thing and split responsibilities only fair considering the body is in two pieces , assigning Toronto detective Martin Ward a miscast Colm Feore who is aiming for a desk job and Montreal detective David Bouchard Patrick Huard to partner together to solve the case.

Their first lead is a helicopter pilot named Luc Therrien Sylvain Marcel. To be fair, there have been so many other cop buddy movies and television series over the years that "Life on Mars" played about the only card left.

With sexism as old as time itself, the only original thing about this one is the Anglo-French conflict. I kind of like the idea of living in a bilingual country, myself.

Ward is uptight while Bouchard plays fast and freely with the rules. At least, they are both divorced. And it is a shame because there are few enough movies that have hockey as a major plot point, especially with the playoffs right around the corner, that a little creativity would have gone a long way.

Walter M Super Reviewer. Aug 02, This movie is at once distinctly Canadian and at the same time one of the most American things I have ever seen.

Lots of fun and in the grand American style makes almost no sense with lots of bullets car chases and explosions. Sean S Super Reviewer.
